TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for high waves that could hit several Indonesian coastal and offshore areas between January 7 and 10.

BMKG meteorologist Ryan Putra Pambudi said that in northern Indonesia, the wind generally moves from the northwest to the northeast, with speeds ranging from 6 to 30 knots. In the southern regions, the wind pattern typically moves from the southwest to the northwest, with speeds between 6 and 25 knots.

“The strongest winds are expected in the waters south of the Mentawai Islands to Lampung, the North Natuna Sea, the Karimata Strait, and the Java Sea,” Ryan said in a written statement on Tuesday, January 7.

This wind pattern, he said, is expected to bring big waves with heights ranging from 1.25 to 2.5 meters in several areas. These include the Indian Ocean west of Aceh to Lampung, the Indian Ocean south of Java to NTT, the Natuna Sea, the Karimata Strait, the Java Sea, the southern Makassar Strait, the Maluku Sea, and the North Pacific Ocean from Maluku to Papua.

In some areas, particularly the North Natuna Sea, waves could reach heights between 2.5 and 4.0 meters. "These big waves could be dangerous for maritime activities," Ryan warned.

BMKG urges the public to exercise caution, especially fishermen using small boats. Ryan advises against sailing if the wind picks up to more than 15 knots and if the waves go over 1.25 meters.

Ryan also warned barge operators to stay alert when wind velocity goes over 16 knots and waves reach 1.5 meters. Ferry operators should be cautious when the wind picks up to more than 21 knots and waves top 2.5 meters. Large vessels, like cargo ships and cruise liners, need to take extra precautions when wind speeds rise above 27 knots and waves go past 4 meters.
