Indonesia, Malaysia Hold Talks on Border Dispute

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Indonesian Foreign Affairs, Sugiono receives a visit from the Malaysian ambassador to Indonesia, Syed Mohamad Hasrin Tengku Hussin, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. The two figures discussed several important issues that have been the hot topics in the bilateral relations between Indonesia and Malaysia, such as the progress of border negotiations, economic cooperation, ASEAN, and the issue of Palestine.

Sugiono appreciated the progress of the ongoing negotiations on the maritime and land borders between Indonesia and Malaysia. He pledged to continue negotiating the remaining outstanding issues.

In the field of economic cooperation, Sugiono is optimistic about the future of Indonesia-Malaysia diplomatic relations. He highlighted several Malaysian investment projects in Indonesia, such as the collaboration between Pertamina and Petronas. The meeting also touched on the cooperation in palm oil commodities.

According to Foreign Affairs Ministry records, Malaysia is the fourth largest investor from Southeast Asia with a recorded investment value of US$4.1 billion in 2024.

In addition to discussing bilateral issues, the two figures also discussed various topics regarding ASEAN. In this context, Sugiono conveyed Indonesia's commitment to support Malaysia's 2025 ASEAN chairmanship.

Sugiono and Syed Mohamad Hasrin Tengku Hussin also discussed the Palestine issue. Both reaffirmed Indonesia and Malaysia's strong commitment to resolving the Palestinian conflict, including through a permanent ceasefire and a two-state solution.

Meanwhile, Malaysia is one of Indonesia's key partners and closest neighbours. Diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Malaysia have been established for 68 years.
