TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Zulkifli Hasan, announced that the government plans to mandate the use of 10% ethanol, or E10, in fuel products by 2026.
“It will be mandatory, but only once we are ready,” Zulkifli said in South Tangerang on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.
Zulkifli noted that blending ethanol into gasoline could influence the price of cassava, one of the primary raw materials for ethanol production.
He projected that cassava prices could rise to Rp2,000 per kilogram as a result, compared to the current government-set price of Rp1,350 per kilogram.
“That’s why we are currently focusing on developing both sugarcane and cassava,” he explained.
The minister expressed optimism that the E10 program could have wide-reaching economic benefits, potentially boosting the agricultural and energy sectors.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, told Antara that the government is still preparing a roadmap for E10 implementation.
The push for E10 follows the government’s successful biodiesel program, which has gradually increased the blend of crude palm oil in diesel fuel, from B10 to the current B40 mix of 10% CPO and 90% diesel.
The government aims to implement B50 by 2026. Bahlil added that the rollout of E10 depends on the readiness of ethanol production facilities, whether sourced from sugarcane or cassava.
