TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, has emphasized the need for sustainable management of Indonesia’s mineral resources to avoid depleting reserves too quickly.
He delivered the message during the opening of the Mineral and Coal (Minerba) Convex 2025 at the Jakarta Convention Center, Senayan, on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.
Bahlil noted that his directive reflects President Prabowo Subianto’s call for responsible use of natural resources, with an eye on the interests of future generations. “The President always reminds us not to exploit our natural resources all at once. We must think about the next generation,” he said.
The minister stressed that mining operations in Indonesia must follow regulations, prioritize sustainability, and minimize environmental impact.
“Mining management must adhere to the applicable principles and must not harm the environment,” Bahlil added.
Highlighting Indonesia’s rich mineral and energy potential, Bahlil noted that the country ranks fifth in the world for coal reserves and is the largest nickel producer globally. “Our tin also ranks second after China,” he said.
Beyond minerals and coal, Bahlil pointed to Indonesia’s significant geothermal energy reserves, making it one of the largest holders worldwide. “Our geothermal potential is immense, second only to the United States,” he said.
With these abundant resources, Bahlil emphasized the government’s commitment to balancing economic growth with energy transition initiatives.
“Following President Prabowo’s directive, Indonesia will remain steadfast in pursuing energy transition as part of our efforts to protect the planet,” he concluded.
