TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) found that most of the illegal cosmetics circulating in Indonesia come from China. The findings were obtained from the results of BPOM's supervision and action in October - November 2024 against the circulation of illegal cosmetics.
"The majority come from China, but there are also several products from Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and India," said Head of BPOM Taruna Ikrar at the BPOM Office, Central Jakarta, Monday, December 30, 2024.
Several brands of illegal cosmetics and containing hazardous materials found by BPOM include Lameila, Aichun Beauty, Wnp'l, Mila Color, 2099, Xixi, Jiopoian, SVMY, Tanako and Anylady. The dangerous content found in the cosmetic products, said Taruna, contains prohibited materials such as mercury and rhodamine B dye.
BPOM also found products and raw materials containing hazardous and/or prohibited materials in cosmetics such as hydroquinone, tretinoin, antibiotics, antifungals, and steroids.
The illegal products containing medicinal ingredients were known to be distributed to beauty clinics in Java such as Bandung, Cimahi, Semarang, Solo, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Mojokerto, and Jember. The 208 items of evidence are estimated to have an economic value of Rp4.59 billion.
There are four regions with the highest circulation of illegal cosmetics in terms of economic value, for example in East Java Rp1.88 billion, Central Java Rp1.4 billion, Banten Rp1.01 billion and West Java reaching Rp4.59 billion.
With such a large economic value, Taruna said BPOM will increase supervision and action against illegal and dangerous cosmetic products. He will also coordinate with other agencies and sectors to eradicate the circulation of illegal and dangerous cosmetics.
