TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia said the country’s average natural gas production in 2025 reached 5,600 billion British thermal units per day (BBTUD), with around 31 percent, or 1,691 BBTUD, allocated for export markets.
Bahlil said improved management of domestic gas production and distribution allowed Indonesia to avoid importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) in early 2025, despite earlier government plans to bring in around 40 LNG cargoes to meet domestic demand.
“Thanks to better coordination and optimization, Indonesia did not import gas in 2025,” Bahlil said at a press conference at the Energy Ministry’s headquarters in Central Jakarta on Thursday, January 8, 2026.
“All of our gas production was fully utilized, partly for domestic consumption and partly for exports. This situation is different from the oil sector.”
For domestic use, the government allocated 3,908 BBTUD of natural gas. The largest share, totaling 2,091 BBTUD, was absorbed by downstream industries and the fertilizer sector, which remain heavily dependent on gas supplies for production and food security.
In terms of lifting, Indonesia’s natural gas output in 2025 reached 951.8 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day (MBOEPD).
However, this figure still fell short of the 2025 state budget target of 1.05 million MBOEPD, reflecting ongoing challenges in boosting upstream production capacity.
Bahlil also highlighted weaker performance in non-tax state revenue from the oil and gas sector. In 2025, PNBP amounted to Rp105.04 trillion, or 83.7 percent of the Rp125.46 trillion target set in the state budget.
According to Bahlil, the shortfall was largely driven by lower global oil prices. The government had assumed an Indonesian Crude Price of US$80 per barrel in the 2025 budget, but the average price throughout the year stood at around US$68 per barrel.
“Our lifting targets were achieved, but prices declined,” Bahlil said. “Commodity prices are currently under pressure.”
