TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia (BI) revealed that Indonesian citizens can conduct transactions using Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) in Japan starting August 17, 2025. QRIS is currently used in several countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore.
BI Deputy Governor Filianingsih stated that the sandbox trial has been ongoing since May 15, 2025, and has progressed well. She said, "Assuming there are no significant obstacles, we hope to launch the outbound use of QRIS on August 17," during a recent press conference in Jakarta.
In addition to Japan, QRIS will also be usable in China. Filianingsih mentioned that the agreement between the Indonesian Payment System Association (ASPI) and Union Pay International of China has reached the finalization stage for business, technical, and operational arrangements.
Union Pay International has entered into agreements with four switching service providers, namely PT Rintis Sejahtera (Rintis), PT Alto Network (Alto), PT Artajasa Pembayaran Elektronik (Artajasa), and PT Jalin Pembayaran Nusantara (Jalin). Filianingsih said, "Hopefully, the trial will also take place on August 17."
QRIS is also intended for use in India and South Korea. With India, technical discussions have begun. Meanwhile, the process with South Korea is currently in the review and finalization stage at the industry level.
Furthermore, Filianingsih stated that BI is also in discussions with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is currently pushing for a digital payment program for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims. She said, "This is particularly relevant for countries with a significant number of pilgrims, such as Indonesia."
