Indonesia's Sugiono Meets Qatari Foreign Minister to Advance Bilateral Cooperation

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono met with the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, during his official visit to Doha on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.

During the meeting, the two foreign ministers discussed elevating bilateral cooperation between their nations to a higher level across various strategic sectors, including politics, economy, defense, security, and infrastructure

Sugiono and Sheikh Mohammed also discussed the planned state visit of President Prabowo to Qatar in 2025. This visit is anticipated to provide momentum for enhancing relations between the two countries.

Furthermore, the two leaders discussed cooperation to garner international support for strengthening the Palestinian people's struggle to achieve independence and establish a sovereign state.

Qatar is a key partner for Indonesia in the Middle East, particularly in the investment sector. Diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Qatar were established in 1976.

Prior to this meeting, the Indonesian government and the State of Qatar signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on investment funding for the construction of 1 million housing units. This MoU supports President Prabowo's 3 million homes program.

The MoU on the development of 1 million housing units was signed between Minister of Public Works and Housing (PUPR) Maruarar Sirait and Secretary-General of the Qatari Royal Family Council, Sheikh Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman Hassan Al-Thani, at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

"I have assigned Deputy Minister Fahri Hamzah for a meeting abroad, and today is a long process led by Pak Hashim as the head of the task force along with his team and Pak Fachri, so we could have this event," Maruarar said at the Merdeka Palace.

Ara, as he is commonly known, stated that this MoU represents a government-to-government collaboration. Following the signing, he said, their team immediately began preparing land.

Ara explained that they are collaborating with the State-Owned Enterprises Minister, Erick Thohir, to secure land from PT KAI and Perum Perumnas. Additionally, the Ministry of State Secretariat is providing assistance with available land in Kemayoran and Senayan.

The Ministry of Finance, through the Directorate General of State Assets, has also prepared land in Kalibata. "The locations will be surveyed soon by the Sheikh, and we are ready to present the locations that I mentioned earlier in Kemayoran, around Senayan, and Kalibata," he added.

Ara mentioned that Qatar is not the sole investor interested in the housing sector. According to him, President Prabowo received a report from Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, the Minister of Investment and Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), indicating that numerous investors are entering Indonesia, accelerating the government's program targets.

"This is for the Indonesian lower middle class, and the priority is in urban areas," he said. "We are given a target of 3 million to build houses, and approximately 40,000 will be built within about 2 months and 20 days."
