Japan-Inspired Cat Island Coming Soon to Thousand Islands

4 hours ago 11

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Governor, Pramono Anung Wibowo, has requested that Cat Island in the Thousand Islands attract tourists and provide welfare for stray cats in Jakarta.

"If we decide to create a Cat Island like the one in Japan, it must be able to attract tourists. The most important thing is providing welfare for the cats," said Pramono in Central Jakarta on Friday, May 9, 2025, as quoted from Antara.

Previously, the plan to create Cat Island was motivated by several reasons, one of which was the large population of stray cats in Jakarta.

Stray Cat Island

Pramono Anung stated that the report on cats is the most frequent issue in the JAKI application, which functions as the official portal of the Jakarta government for official information, reporting city issues, and utilizing various public services. One of them is that many people requested cat sterilization.

On Friday, May 9, 2025, the Jakarta Governor also received an audience from Animal Defenders. He mentioned that the meeting also discussed the Cat Island.

"Animal Defenders has suggested Cat Island. The Jakarta Provincial Government has positively welcomed this suggestion," said Pramono Anung, quoted from Antara on Friday, May 9, 2025.

Previously, Pramono targeted sterilizing 21,000 domestic cats throughout Jakarta in 2025. Pramono also expressed his desire to make Jakarta a city that is friendly to animals under his leadership.

Therefore, he believes establishing a cat island could improve the cats' welfare. This project is one of the early programs of the Head of the Jakarta Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Office in the effort to improve animal welfare in Jakarta. Cat Island is designed as a shelter for stray cats found in various areas of Jakarta. The program is expected to become a long-term solution for managing the population of stray cats in Jakarta.

Inspired by Japan

In addition, Pramono hopes that the Cat Island in the Thousand Islands Regency can become a tourist destination. He cited a cat island in Japan as an example. The cat island in Japan that Pramono referred to is located in Aoshima, Ehime Prefecture. The island can be reached by train or boat from Tokyo in several hours.

Location of Cat Island

"We have been free to choose which island will be designated as Cat Island. We are currently conducting a study to determine the location," said the Acting Regent of Thousand Islands at that time, Muhammad Fadjar Churniawan, Thousand Islands in Jakarta, Monday, April 21, 2025.

Fadjar mentioned they had visited Onrust Island, Cipir Island, and Rambut Island. "We are now visiting Little Tidung Island, which is under the direct auspices of the Jakarta Provincial Government," he said.

He stated that Cat Island would be professionally managed, prioritizing health, care, and other needs so tourists can enjoy it. He added that the presence of Cat Island can also provide employment for the people of the Thousand Islands.

On the other hand, the founder of Animal Defenders Indonesia, Doni Herdaru Tona, thinks that Little Tidung Island is very spacious and suitable for Cat Island tourism. Because he sees the potential on Little Tidung Island with its white sand and good vegetation.
