TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) has revealed alleged extortion practices targeting individuals arrested in connection with the riots that erupted from late August to early September 2025.
According to YLBHI, police officers are suspected of carrying out the extortion during interrogations.
YLBHI Deputy Chair for Advocacy and Networks, Arif Maulana, said the incidents occurred in multiple regions.
“The alleged extortion of arrestees took place in several areas, one of which is Makassar,” Arif stated during a press conference on Monday, September 29, 2025.
Beyond Makassar, YLBHI also identified cases in Bogor and Jakarta. Arif said the sums extorted ranged from tens of thousands to millions of rupiah.
However, he did not specify which police units were involved, nor did he disclose the number of victims or the motives.
Coordinating Minister for Legal, Political, and Security Affairs Yusril Ihza Mahendra previously confirmed that thousands had been detained following the riots.
“The police arrested a total of 6,719 individuals across Indonesia after the riots,” Yusril said on Friday, September 26, 2025. He added that most were released within days, with 5,858 people freed.
Earlier, Deputy Chief of the National Police Commissioner General Dedi Prasetyo reported that 5,444 people had been arrested in connection with the unrest. Of that number, 4,800 were released, leaving 583 still facing legal proceedings.
Dedi explained that the remaining detainees are undergoing intensive questioning in cities including Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Makassar, and Medan.
Investigators, he said, are categorizing them based on their roles in the riots, whether as intellectual actors, funders, field operators, or simply participants who joined without clear involvement.
