TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is strengthening the security system of fishing ports as the front guard of the capture fisheries subsector. Officers of the Directorate General of Capture Fisheries are now equipped with internal auditor certification for security management systems to support this effort.
The Acting Director General of Capture Fisheries, Lotharia Latif, stated that fishing ports are not just places for ships to dock and unload fish. He emphasized that ports are a symbol of national security and the spearhead of maritime economy. "Fishing ports are showcases of natural resource sustainability that support economic stability. Therefore, a reliable strategy is needed to counter security disturbances, both technical, social, and criminal," Lotharia said in a written statement on Sunday, 30 June 2025.
In addition to strengthening security, the KKP is also pushing for fishing ports to be designated as national vital objects. The Director of Fishing Ports, Ady Chandra, welcomed this initiative. According to him, this status will provide certainty of protection for port operational activities.
Ady considered that fishing ports as national vital objects can avoid potential disturbances and sabotage at these strategic locations. He added that they have organized a socialization of the national vital object security management system in Jakarta. "This security system will be integrated to protect state assets and investments," said Ady.
Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, also urged the strengthening of the role of ports as centers for regional economic growth. He emphasized the importance of improving port facilities to further optimize the productivity of coastal communities.
