TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, has announced the temporary blocking of the artificial intelligence feature Grok on the social media platform X, citing concerns over harmful and pornographic content generated using AI.
“The government, through the Ministry of Communication and Digital, has temporarily terminated access to the Grok application,” Meutya said in a written statement on Friday, January 10, 2026.
She explained that the move was taken to protect women, children, and the wider public from the risks of pornographic and abusive content produced through artificial intelligence technologies.
Meutya, a politician from the Golkar Party, said the government views non-consensual sexual deepfakes as a serious violation of human rights, personal dignity, and digital security.
Alongside the temporary block, the ministry has formally requested X to provide clarification regarding the negative impacts associated with the use of Grok.
The minister said the decision was based on the authority of the Ministry of Communication and Digital under Minister of Communication and Information Technology Regulation No. 5 of 2020 on the Operation of Electronic Systems, particularly Article 9.
Article 9 requires all electronic system operators to ensure that the platforms they manage do not contain, facilitate, or disseminate prohibited electronic information or documents.
