TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Chair of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), Dave Laksono, urged openness and transparency from the Malaysian government in the shooting incident against Indonesian migrant workers in the waters of Tanjung Rhu, Selangor, Malaysia, on January 24, 2025.
Dave regretted the shooting incident because it could tarnish the good relations between Indonesia and Malaysia.
"We ask for openness, clear and firm transparency from the Malaysian authorities themselves and also from the entire Indonesian government, be it the Ministry of P2MI, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bakamla or the Navy and also the police to also be involved in investigating this case," said Dave in a video statement received by Tempo, Tuesday, January 28, 2025.
Dave also demanded openness from the Malaysian authorities regarding the situation and escalation during the incident if there were indeed violations of the law committed by Indonesian migrant workers. According to him, Malaysia must explain how high the escalation was during the incident that made the Malaysian authorities carry out the shooting.
"We hope that this issue can be investigated to the end, there is no cover-up, and it should not become a bad precedent to cover up cases that result in people dying," said the Chairman of the Golkar Party's Central Leadership Council.
Meanwhile, the Director of Protection of Indonesian Citizens (PWNI) of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Judha Nugraha, said that the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur received information from the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) that the Indonesian citizen who died was a citizen from Riau with the initials B. Judha said B could be repatriated after the autopsy was completed.
"The Indonesian Embassy will carry out all procedures for handling the body, as well as facilitate repatriation to the area of origin," said Judha in a message to Tempo, January 28, 2025.
Meanwhile, for the 4 Indonesian citizens who were injured, the Indonesian Embassy received information that they had received treatment at the hospital and were currently in stable condition. The Indonesian Embassy has obtained consular access to meet them on Wednesday, January 29, 2025.
Judha said that the five Indonesian citizens were victims of shooting by APMM around the waters of Tanjung Rhu, Selangor, Malaysia, on January 24, 2025. At around 03:00 am local time, APMM shot at a ship in the waters of Tanjung Rhu, Selangor while on patrol.
The shooting was carried out after the ship's passengers allegedly resisted. This incident resulted in one Indonesian citizen dying and four others being injured.
In response to this incident, the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur immediately took steps to ensure protection for the affected Indonesian citizens. The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also sent a diplomatic note to Malaysia to encourage a thorough investigation, including highlighting the possibility of excessive use of force.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur will continue to monitor developments in this case and provide consular and legal assistance, to ensure that the rights of Indonesian citizens are fulfilled in the legal system in Malaysia," said Judha.
