TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and his Iranian counterpart, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, exchanged views on regional and global developments during a meeting in Mashhad, Iran, while emphasizing the importance of resolving conflicts through diplomacy.
"Both ministers exchanged views on regional and global developments and reaffirmed the importance of conflict resolution through dialogue, diplomacy, respect for state sovereignty, and international law," Indonesia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement received in Jakarta on Saturday.
Sugiono visited Mashhad as part of an Indonesian delegation attending the funeral and final tribute ceremonies for Iran's late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
During the meeting, the two foreign ministers also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations through more concrete cooperation in various priority sectors.
Sugiono further encouraged the optimization of bilateral mechanisms to advance cooperation programs that provide tangible benefits for the people of both countries.
The Indonesian delegation also included People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Ahmad Muzani and representatives from Indonesia's two largest Islamic organizations, Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah.
According to the Foreign Ministry, the delegation's presence reflected Indonesia's commitment to peace, solidarity among nations, and respect for the Iranian people.
The delegation also met Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf to strengthen parliamentary diplomacy, expand inter-parliamentary exchanges, and deepen people-to-people ties between the two countries.
Iran had invited Indonesia to pay its final respects to Khamenei at the Imam Reza shrine complex in Mashhad. The Foreign Ministry said Indonesia became the first official foreign delegation to visit the late leader's tomb.
The ministry added that the visit highlighted the close friendship between Indonesia and Iran and reaffirmed Jakarta's long-standing "free and active" foreign policy, which seeks to promote peace, stability, and international cooperation.
