TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Results of a survey by the Indonesian Survey Circle, or Lingkaran Survei Indonesia (LSI) Denny JA conclude that Generation Z is the group most opposed to regional elections through the Regional Representative Council or DPRD. In this research, LSI Denny JA categorized Generation Z as respondents aged below 27 years as of 2025.
The Director of LSI Denny JA, Ardian Sopa, stated that the Gen Z respondents opposing the indirect regional elections reached 84 percent. "Gen Z is the most vehement in rejecting regional elections through the DPRD," said Ardian Sopa at the institution's office in Jakarta on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.
The survey involved 1,200 individuals selected from various regions in Indonesia using a multistage random sampling method. All respondents had the right to vote and were from diverse age groups, ranging from 17 years to over 60 years.
The research was conducted from October 10-19, 2025 through face-to-face interviews using structured questionnaires. The margin of error is approximately 2.9 percent. LSI Denny JA believes that the survey results can reflect the choices of 204 million eligible voters in Indonesia as of 2024.
Ardian mentioned that after Gen Z, respondents in the 28-34 age range or the Millennial generation recorded the second-highest opposition at 71 percent. Furthermore, 60 percent of the Generation X (aged 44-59) opposed indirect regional elections, and 63 percent of the Baby Boomer generation expressed a similar rejection.
"This data shows that the rejection is not only systemic in a single generation. The majority of rejection occurs across nearly all generations," he said.
The agenda of regional elections through the DPRD has been repeatedly promoted by the Golkar Party since December 2024. During the party's anniversary celebrations in 2024 and 2025, the Chairman of the Golkar Party, Bahlil Lahadalia, revealed the party's desire to revive indirect regional elections.
President Prabowo Subianto attended the party's anniversary celebrations twice. In his speeches at the Golkar events, Prabowo indicated his support for regional elections through the DPRD.
According to Ardian, the survey results should be viewed wisely by the government and political elite. This is because 66 percent of the respondents want regional elections to continue to be conducted directly. He emphasized that obtaining figures above 60 percent in public opinion surveys represents massive and systemic opposition.
Based on interviews and analysis, LSI Denny JA concluded that the rejection of regional elections through the DPRD is due to the public's accustomedness to directly electing regional leaders. The collective memory from the 20 years since the first regional elections in 2005 has greatly influenced public perception.
"The people have become accustomed to direct elections, so if suddenly there is a change with unacceptable assumptions, the rejection is naturally strong," Ardian said.
He also recommended that instead of eliminating direct regional elections, the government and political parties should improve the quality of regional elections. For example, by reducing negative excesses through cost control and tightening the recruitment of cadres, as well as enhancing oversight.
In every discourse on changing the democratic system, Ardian urged the government and DPR to involve the public openly. Additionally, he believed that the DPRD and political parties must strive to rebuild integrity in order to gain the public's trust.
