TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Budi Gunawan emphasized that the government will take firm legal action against human trafficking perpetrators.

On Tuesday, March 18, 2025, the government repatriated 400 victims of online scam exploitation linked to in Myawaddy, Myanmar.

"The government will certainly follow through with this process. Through the initial assessment, we can uncover the modus operandi and identify the perpetrators," Budi Gunawan stated in Jakarta on Tuesday, March 18, 2025.

He also stressed the critical role of the assessment process in uncovering cases, including the potential presence of traffickers among the repatriated victims. "What’s essential is that some illegal actors may be among those returning. That’s why this assessment serves as a key entry point," he stated.

The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs further emphasized the need to strengthen monitoring at the source or departure points to identify those involved in illegal departures.

"Reinforcement at the source is crucial. We must focus on departure areas where non-procedural or illegal methods are used. The individuals behind these operations must be identified," he asserted.

Budi Gunawan also highlighted the importance of collaboration among law enforcement agencies. "Within the government, we have law enforcement mechanisms in place, from the police to the prosecutor’s office. Our intelligence units must be strengthened to create a comprehensive, all-in-one collaboration that works cohesively," he added.

He emphasized that handling human trafficking cases requires strong cooperation from all elements, including the private sector, civic organizations, and the media.

"It requires strong collaboration, synergy from all state instruments to act. Second, it also requires support from the private sector and also from organizations," he said.

Regarding cross-border human trafficking cases, Budi Gunawan acknowledged that handling them is not easy because it requires international cooperation with various countries that have different legal systems.

However, he affirmed the government's commitment to protect Indonesian citizens abroad.
