TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Spokesperson of Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry Rolliansyah Soemirat, also known as Roy, spoke about the ongoing trade war involving the United States due to President Donald Trump's import tariff policies. In this situation, Roy affirmed Indonesia's commitment to maintaining economic and trade collaboration with all nations, including the United States.

Roy stated that this commitment is reflected in various bilateral communications established so far, both at the ministerial level and through the respective ambassadors of each country in Jakarta and Washington D.C.

"Everything shows an agreement to strengthen cooperation between countries in forms that are mutually beneficial," said Roy during a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, March 6, 2025.

Roy further explained that the strengthening of this cooperation was also agreed upon by Foreign Minister Sugiono and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in their telephone conversation earlier this year.

"The strengthening of the strategic partnership cooperation between the two countries will also continue to be placed in various collaborations between the two countries," he said.

Furthermore, Roy ensured that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would continue to collaborate with various other technical ministries to ensure that Indonesia's foreign economic policies remain responsive to global dynamics.

According to Roy, this step is crucial to ensure that national economic growth progresses in line with international economy and trade dynamics.

On Thursday night, January 23, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono had received a call from the U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, on January 22, 2025. During the conversation, Sugiono congratulated Marco Rubio on his inauguration as the 72nd U.S. Secretary of State on January 21, 2025.

Sugiono also affirmed Indonesia's strong commitment to promote bilateral relations with the U.S., particularly in trade and investment, to advance the economic growth and welfare of the people from both countries. Both foreign ministers also agreed on the importance of strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries for the security and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific region.

Sugiono and Rubio, during the telephone call, exchanged views on issues in the region and globally, including developments in the Middle East and the importance of achieving peace and reconstruction in Gaza. Rubio welcomed Indonesia's willingness to be involved in the peace process in the Middle East and post-conflict reconstruction.

U.S. Department of State spokesperson Tammy Bruce also conveyed this telephone conversation between the two foreign ministers through her press statement. She explained that they discussed the importance of peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, including exchanging views on maritime security in the South China Sea.

"Secretary Rubio and Foreign Minister Sugiono recognized the importance of the U.S.-Indonesia relationship and affirmed our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership's contribution to a secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific region," said Bruce.

Bruce further stated that both leaders have expressed a joint commitment to prioritize national economic growth and recognize the importance of working together to deepen trade and investment in mutually beneficial areas.
