TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) Nezar Patria responded to the issue of foreign governments that have collectively blocked the China-based artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot application, DeepSeek. The AI application, which initially gained the highest popularity upon its emergence, is allegedly involved in data theft.
Nezar stated that Komdigi would not block the application for now. According to him, the presence of the Asian AI application can serve as an alternative to various digital developments. "And as a country that is developing artificial intelligence technology, we certainly open, view, and study various developments that occur," he said when met at his office in Jakarta on Monday, February 17, 2025.
Some countries that have blocked Deepseek include the United States, Italy, India, and South Korea. The prohibition is based on several reasons, such as concerns threatening national sovereignty and security. Not only Deepseek, but other Chinese-made applications such as TikTok, WeChat, and UC Browser have also been blocked.
The recent remarkable popularity of DeepSeek has positioned it at the top in the App Store and Play Store. This success has attracted the attention of many users but also raised significant issues related to data security. DeepSeek is known to collect and store user data on servers located in China.
DeepSeek has now become one of the most widely used chatbot applications. This application offers various features that allow users to analyze files, answer asked questions, and search for and access information on the internet. This makes DeepSeek a multifunctional tool to assist users in their daily activities.
An advantage of this application is its ability to support file uploads and allow users to synchronize conversation histories across all their devices. This provides flexibility for users who want to continue conversations or take advantage of analysis results from different devices, providing a smoother and more practical experience.
Meanwhile, the Chinese government questioned why several countries restrict access to DeepSeek. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that their government opposes national security justifications for banning the use of DeepSeek and the politicization of trade and technology. "We will firmly protect lawful rights and interests of Chinese companies," he said at a press conference in Beijing on Thursday, February 6, 2025.
