TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian government aims to complete normalizing the Ciliwung River by 2026. Minister of Public Works (PU) Dody Hanggodo stated that this target was agreed upon in a meeting with Minister of Agrarian and Spatial Planning/Head of the National Land Agency (ATR/BPN) Nusron Wahid and Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung.

"Our main focus is accelerating land acquisition so that the work can be carried out gradually starting from this year until next year," said Dody on Thursday, March 13, 2025, as quoted from an official statement. He also mentioned that a budget has been prepared for the program.

Furthermore, Dody said the normalization of the Ciliwung River is part of the medium-term strategy to control flooding in Jakarta. According to him, this will effectively manage 40 percent of Jakarta's flood potential. In addition to reducing the risk of flooding, he claimed normalizing the Ciliwung River can improve the river's ability to hold and flow water optimally.

Currently, 17.14 kilometers of the 33.69-kilometer-long normalization of the Ciliwung River has been completed, leaving 16.55 kilometers unfinished. "We need a total land area of 35.94 hectares with 5,353 plots. This is our priority shortly," he said.

Meanwhile, Nusron Wahid mentioned that the Ministry of ATR/BPN has established a land acquisition scheme along the Ciliwung River, particularly in the segment between Pengadegan and Rawajati. The land to be acquired covers an area of 11 hectares with a length of 16 kilometers. The Golkar Party politician targets the completion of land acquisition by the end of May 2025, following the location determination this month. "Thus, physical construction can immediately commence in July 2025," said Nusron.

Further addressing affected residents, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said a humane approach would be a priority. The Jakarta Provincial Government, with the central government, will prepare a suitable relocation and compensation scheme. "This normalization is crucial for Jakarta, but we also have to ensure that the affected people receive a fair solution," said Pramono.
