TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Police’s Professional and Security Division (Propam) will hold an ethics trial today for 18 officers suspected of extorting attendees at the Djakarta Warehouse Project (DWP) 2024 concert. The trial will take place this morning, Tuesday, December 31, at the TNCC building of the National Police Headquarters in South Jakarta.
"According to the commitment of the Police Leadership through the Propam Division, which has been communicated, we have taken firm action, and today we begin the ethics hearings, which will be conducted simultaneously and continuously," said Brig. Gen. Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko, Head of Public Relations at the National Police, when confirmed.
Separately, National Police Commissioner Yusuf Warsyim stated that the ethics trials would be held individually, not all at once. "That’s the plan. It won’t be a group hearing but one violator at a time. Usually, it takes about one day per violator," he said via WhatsApp message.
Previously, Propam head Insp. Gen. Abdul Karim explained that 18 police officers from the Metro Jaya Police, Central Jakarta Resort Police, and Kemayoran Sectoral Police had been found to violate the police code of ethics. They are suspected of extorting 45 Malaysian nationals who were about to attend the DWP music concert in Indonesia.
The officers, who were part of the narcotics investigation unit, randomly conducted urine tests on concertgoers. They then threatened to detain those who did not pay a ransom, regardless of their drug test results. According to Abdul Karim, the amount of the ransom fees varied.
"A total of 45 Malaysian nationals became victims of extortion, with the seized evidence amounting to Rp2.5 billion," he said during a press briefing at the National Police HQ on Tuesday, December 24.
How the Case Unfolded
The case came to light through social media posts by Malaysian concertgoers. Around 400 attendees claimed they were extorted by police, with the total amount reaching RM 9 million (around Rp32 billion). One of the posts was shared on Instagram by the account @quss*bum in the comment section.
“It was a horrible experience. While I was enjoying the event, the police suddenly came and started arresting people around me. How can the police arrest and take people one by one without a clear reason? As far as we know, this area falls under the jurisdiction of Central Jakarta Police,” the post stated, accompanied by the hashtag #BoycottDjakartaWarehouseProject.
Another concertgoer, @squi***, also claimed to have seen many visitors being arrested, even though no illegal items were found. "While I was enjoying the event, the police suddenly came and started arresting people around me," the user wrote.
The account also mentioned that visitors who tested negative for drugs were still forced to pay a fee.
