TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hundreds of shrimp industry players across Indonesia are gathering in Banyuwangi for three days from October 14-16, 2025, for the Forum Shrimp Fair. The forum will discuss the recent discovery of radioactive contamination of Cesium-137 (Cs-137) in the Fish Processing Unit (UPI) in Cikande industrial area and the export dynamics that follow, especially to the United States.

The forum, initiated by the Shrimp Club Indonesia (SCI), is attended by entrepreneurs, breeders, shrimp business owners, and shrimp pond equipment providers from Sumatra, Java, Bali, and West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). One of the topics discussed in the forum is the market opportunities and solutions related to the tightening import regulations by the United States authorities, following the Cs-137 case.

This discovery has affected shrimp exports from Indonesia to the United States. "Technically, the discovery is not found in cultivation sites, and it was only found at UPI in Cikande. There are no issues in other locations," said the Head of the Center for Brackish Water Aquaculture Fisheries Jepara, Supito, in Banyuwangi.

The government ensures that outside of Cikande, shrimp products from other UPI locations are confirmed to be free from harmful exposure.

Supito said the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and the Ministry of Coordinating Human Development and Cultural Affairs have implemented standard operating procedures to issue radioactive-free certificates. The certificates are issued by the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (Bapetan) in order to normalize shrimp product exports.

"The opportunity for exports to the United States is still wide open, because only one location is listed as red (UPI Cikande), while other areas can still export as long as they obtain the radioactive-free certificate from Bapetan," said Supito.

The Adviser Council of the Shrimp Club Indonesia (SCI) Banyuwangi, Hardi Pitoyo, hoped the forum could cultivate innovations and ideas to ensure the continuous development of the Indonesian shrimp industry. "This is business dynamics. We must be able to follow, anticipate, and then find the best solutions," said Pitoyo.

The Regent of Banyuwangi, Ipuk Fiestiandani, expressed support for the forum, considering Banyuwangi is one of the largest shrimp producers in Indonesia. Ipuk hopes this forum could serve as a platform to strengthen shrimp entrepreneurs and farmers in Indonesia, including in Banyuwangi.

"This is a moment for all of us to come together, strengthen each other, so that when issues arise, they can be resolved together. Hopefully, through this forum, the issue of shrimp exports to the United States can be resolved," said Ipuk.

In addition to seminars, this event will also include exhibitions of technology, equipment, and shrimp pond cultivation products.
