TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran's president, the head of the judiciary, and a member of the Guardian Council will assume the duties of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in an Israeli and US attack on Saturday, February 28, 2026. "The president, the head of the judiciary, and a member of the Guardian Council will assume the duties of the Supreme Leader during the vacancy," Iran's First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber told the IRNA news agency, as reported by Antara.
On Saturday morning local time, the United States (US) and Israel launched a series of attacks on Iran, including the capital Tehran. The attacks caused infrastructure damage and civilian casualties. Iran then launched retaliatory missile attacks on Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was confirmed killed in a US-Israeli missile attack on his workplace. Following Khamenei's death, the Iranian government declared 40 days of mourning and a week-long holiday. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Iranian Army, in written statements, vowed to avenge Khamenei's death.
Iran's state media outlet Fars has announced the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In addition to Khamenei, according to Fars, as reported by Sky News, several members of his family were killed in the attack.
Al Arabiya reported, citing reliable sources within the supreme leader's family, that Khamenei's daughter, son-in-law, grandson, and daughter-in-law were among the dead.
The report comes after President Donald Trump previously said that Khamenei had been killed in an airstrike. That claim was previously denied by Iranian state media. Trump called it the greatest opportunity for the Iranian people to reclaim their country. He added that American military operations would continue.
The United States (US) and Israel carried out military strikes against Iran on Saturday, targeting top leaders and plunging the Middle East into a wider conflict. Trump said the operation would eliminate a security threat to the US and give Iranians a chance to overthrow their rulers.
