TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran unveiled a new ballistic missile on Sunday, February 2, 2025, that it said could travel 1,700 kilometers (1,100 miles). The launch took place at a ceremony in Tehran attended by President Masoud Pezeshkian, Al Arabiya reported.
State television broadcast images of the missile, dubbed Etemad, or “trust” in Persian. It said it had a maximum range of 1,700 kilometers (930 miles) and was the “latest ballistic missile” manufactured by Iran’s defense ministry.
Iran’s missiles, including its latest designs, are capable of reaching its arch-foe Israel, which it targeted twice last year during the Gaza genocide.
“The development of defense capabilities and space technology… aims to ensure that no country dares to attack Iranian territory,” Pezeshkian said in a televised speech.
The ceremony took place on Iran’s national air day and days before the 46th anniversary of the founding of the Islamic Republic on February 10, 1979.
Since the return of US President Donald Trump – who implemented a “maximum pressure” approach to Iran during his first term – Tehran has staged a series of shows of force, including large-scale military exercises and the establishment of underground military bases.
At the same time, Tehran has shown a willingness to resume talks on its nuclear program, which has been the subject of tension with Western powers for decades.
Iran, which used to get most of its military equipment from its ally the United States, has been forced to develop its own weapons since Washington severed ties and imposed sanctions after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
After being under an arms embargo during its devastating war with Iraq between 1980 and 1988, Iran now has a large arsenal of home-grown weapons, including missiles, air defense systems and drones.
