TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Environment Agency has activated an emergency response operation following a landslide at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Site (TPST) in Bekasi on Sunday, March 8, 2026. The disaster resulted in multiple casualties at the primary disposal site for Jakarta’s waste.
The Head of the Jakarta Environment Agency, Asep Kuswanto, explained that the operation aims to ensure the safety of field workers, manage casualties, and stabilize the affected area to promptly restore waste management services. Alongside the Jakarta Environment Agency, a joint team involved in the operation includes the Jakarta and Bekasi Disaster Management Agencies (BPBD), the Bekasi Fire Department, Bantargebang Police, and personnel from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI).
"The main priority is the safety of the workers, handling casualties, and expediting the evacuation of vehicles buried in the landslide," said Asep Kuswanto from the site, as quoted in a written statement.
According to data compiled by the Jakarta Environment Agency as of Sunday night, the landslide at TPST Bantargebang claimed three lives: Sumini (60), a local stall owner; Dedi Sutrisno, a truck driver for the Central Jakarta Environment Agency; and Endah Widayati (25), a scavenger. Additionally, Slamet, a driver for the South Jakarta Environment Agency, sustained minor injuries and received medical treatment at a nearby facility before being discharged.

During the operation, five out of the seven trucks buried in the landslide were successfully evacuated. Meanwhile, the recovery process for the remaining two units, driven by Riki Supriyadi of the North Jakarta Environment Agency and Irwan Supriyatin, continued into Sunday night.
"All casual workers who passed away will receive compensation through workers' social insurance (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan), while medical expenses for the injured will be covered by the local government, and social compensation will be provided for other affected victims, including stall owners and scavengers," Asep said.
The emergency response is supported by 13 excavators and two standby ambulances. Simultaneously, stabilization efforts are being carried out to prevent further landslides. Asep stated that the reinforcement of the dumping zone is being conducted gradually to restore operational safety.
"Safety in waste management at TPST Bantargebang is our top priority," Asep said, adding, "Once the area is deemed safe, we will immediately proceed with the stabilization and arrangement of the dumping zone to regain control of the situation."
While the handling process remains ongoing, the Jakarta Environment Agency ensured that public waste services continue to operate. One temporary dumping point at TPST Bantargebang remains open to maintain the rotation of trucks from Jakarta, while two other points undergo cleanup. "At this time, we have asked the Jakarta Provincial Environment Agency to postpone waste shipments to TPST Bantargebang until the evacuation is completed."
