TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Provincial Narcotics Agency (BNNP Jakarta) has talked about a potential increase in drug distribution activities in 2025. Brigadier General Nurhadi, Head of BNNP Jakarta, attributed this prediction to the weakening of the local economy, which may drive individuals towards illicit activities as a means of income generation.
“Based on intelligence analysis, there will be a trend of individuals resorting to shortcuts, such as becoming drug dealers or couriers, to meet their economic needs,” Nurhadi said during a press conference held at the BNNP DKI Jakarta office in Central Jakarta on Monday, December 30, 2024.
Nurhadi said that throughout 2024, BNNP Jakarta uncovered 21 drug distribution cases, seizing a total of 35.7 kilograms of narcotics. This includes 2,790.8 grams of crystal methamphetamine, 32,706.59 grams of marijuana, and 263 ecstasy pills. This achievement surpasses the agency's initial target of nine cases.
“We have exceeded the target set by uncovering 21 narcotics trafficking cases, representing a 233.33 percent increase,” Nurhadi emphasized.
Of the 21 suspects apprehended, two remain on the wanted list (DPO). “One suspect is in DPO for a 2024 case and is currently incarcerated in Tangerang Prison. Another suspect wanted in connection with a 2023 case has escaped,” he explained.
BNNP Jakarta's efforts have focused on dismantling drug distribution networks operating within the Jakarta region. Dealers and distributors commonly utilize expedition services to transport narcotics, disguising them as ordinary packages. Marijuana and crystal methamphetamine remain the most widely consumed drugs in the area.
The Head of BNNP Jakarta acknowledged the continued existence of three "Drug Villages" within the city: Kampung Ambon, Kampung Boncos, and Kampung Muara Bahar. These areas are characterized by high levels of drug abuse and distribution.
“These areas exhibit significant and persistent levels of drug abuse and distribution, despite ongoing efforts to address the issue,” Nurhadi stated.
He further acknowledged the challenges posed by the complex urban landscape in eradicating drug activity in these areas, such as numerous narrow alleys.
