TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta's Deputy Governor, Rano Karno, believes that the Car Free Day (CFD) should be expanded to more areas as a measure to reduce air pollution. He mentioned that Jakarta is among the five unhealthy cities in Indonesia.

"Jakarta, Semarang, and Riau are included. That's the reality. That's why I hope Car Free Day is expanded beyond Thamrin and held in every area. What for? Firstly, to reduce emissions," Rano said during the Jakarta Eco Future Festival 2025 event at Cibis Park, Jakarta, on Thursday, September 25, 2025.

He also emphasized the importance of developing green open spaces. "Why do we build parks? Based on the law, Jakarta should have 30 percent green open spaces. Currently, we only have five percent, which is one effort. However, it requires sacrifices to build quickly," he stated.

Separately, the Head of Jakarta's Environmental Agency, Asep Kuswanto, explained that the organization of CFD is under the authority of the Transportation Agency, but his office fully supports it.

"So, if CFD is the leading sector, it belongs to the Transportation Agency. We fully support the efforts to reduce emissions. For example, one thing we are collaborating with the Transportation Agency on is the implementation of an integrated low-emission zone," Asep said.

He mentioned that the integrated low-emission zone (LEZ) will limit the quality of vehicles passing through certain areas. "The Transportation Agency is currently preparing the regulation, and we strongly support it," he added.

According to Asep, CFD has indeed proven to reduce emissions while providing a different experience for residents. "As we all know, during CFD, the community greatly enjoys the air in Jakarta. And we hope the public also becomes more aware of the importance of improving air quality not only during CFD, but also on other days," he concluded.
