TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Environmental Office recorded 1,500 tons of waste piling up after the floods that inundated parts of the city. Jakarta was flooded after downpours on Sunday night, March 2, 2025.
Head of the agency, Asep Kuswanto, said the garbage piles were transported from the Ciliwung waste filter at T.B. Simatubang, South Jakarta.
"Our officers continue working to ensure that the Ciliwung River flows unobstructed from waste and that Jakarta is free from flooding caused by garbage clogging the river,” said Asep in his written statement on Monday, March 3, 2025.
Asep mentioned that 60 sanitation workers carry out the waste handling using seven heavy equipment, including an amphibious excavator, material handler, and wheel loader.
Thousands of garbages were observed floating in the river since Sunday night. Meanwhile, as of Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at 9:00 a.m., floods still inundate 62 neighborhoods in Jakarta, as confirmed by the Jakarta Disaster Management Agency (BPBD).
“Four road sections also remain submerged (due to floods),” the Jakarta BPBD’s head of data and information center, Mohamad Yohan, told Tempo on Tuesday.
The 62 flooded neighborhoods spread across West Jakarta, South Jakarta, and East Jakarta. The floods were caused by torrential downpours and the overflow of the Ciliwung and Pesanggrahan rivers.
Based on the data Tempo received, BPBD reported that as many as 1,251 residents were forced to seek shelters to avoid the floods. These people came from several districts, including Kampug Melayu, Bidara Cina, Cawang, East Pejaten, and East Cilandak. East Pejaten recorded the highest number of displaced residents at 750 individuals.
Yohan urges residents to remain cautious and vigilant about subsequent floodings. In case of emergency, he said, residents can contact the 112 call center. “The service is free of charge and operates 24 hours non-stop,” he said.
