TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung visited the evacuation camp for flood-affected residents at the Otista Sports Hall (GOR) in East Jakarta on Wednesday, March 5, 2025. During his visit, Pramono urged residents to remain alert for the potential of heavy rainfall, predicted to occur from March 11 to 20, 2025.
"We remind everyone to anticipate it," Pramono told the evacuees at GOR Otista, East Jakarta, on Wednesday, March 5, 2025."
Given the extended period until March 11, 2025, the former state secretary minister gave evacuees the option to either stay at the evacuation site or return to their respective homes.
According to him, the decision for residents to return home will depend on the prevailing flood conditions. Pramono also advised people not to panic but to remain vigilant about the potential for floods. "No need to worry, but don't be complacent," he added.
He explained that he had held a coordination meeting with his staff to prepare for the potential flooding due to extreme rainfall. One of the measures being taken is the implementation of weather modification operations (WMO).
He stated that WMO aims to direct rainwater expected in the Jakarta area towards the sea. In carrying out WMO, the Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) will collaborate with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). "Of course, they will determine the time," he said.
Pramono instructed the Natural Resources Agency (SDA) to open a number of water gates to reduce the water burden in the Ciliwung River. Pramono deemed the opening of the water gates essential because the Manggarai Water Gate had reached a high alert level two, with a water level of 850 centimeters.
Pramono also ordered the operation of a total of 500 water pumps located at 200 points throughout Jakarta. He further requested the full operation of two Ciliwung sedimentation gates leading to the East Flood Canal.
"We will also conduct weather modification," he said during his visit to the Manggarai Water Gate in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, March 4, 2025. In addition, Pramono has activated Disaster Alert Villages to assist residents in flood-affected areas.
He said that he had coordinated with the Jakarta Social Agency to ensure that the needs of residents at various evacuation points were met. "So I've also requested for public kitchens to be activated in the field," he said.
