TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The public libraries located in Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM), Cikini, Central Jakarta, will now stay open for visitors until 10:00 PM, starting today, May 9, 2025. This change in operating hours is a new policy put in place by Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo.
He visited the TIM library in Cikini on the first day it was open for extended hours. Currently, TIM has two libraries: the Jakarta Library and the H.B. Jassin Literature Documentation Center. "Both will be open until 10:00 PM," Pramono said while at TIM on Friday.
The politician from the PDIP party spoke with several people visiting the library as he looked at the reading areas at TIM. According to him, the visitors were happy about the later closing time. "Most of them showed their appreciation," he noted.
Furthermore, Pramono mentioned that some visitors even hoped the library could stay open until 11:00 PM or even all day and night. However, the Governor explained that for now, the libraries will only be open until 10:00 PM.
The Head of the Jakarta Library and Archives Agency, Nasruddin Djoko Surjono, stated that the 10:00 PM closing time will be every day. "This includes Saturdays and Sundays," Djoko said as he accompanied Governor Pramono at the library.
Djoko explained that the Jakarta City Government had already tested keeping the library open later at night before making it a daily practice. He said that the test saw a 53 percent increase in the number of visitors.
During the trial period, he mentioned that the average number of visitors on weekdays was around 1,300 people. He stated that this was a rapid increase from the usual number of visitors, which was between 500 and 1,000 people. Before the change in hours, the TIM library closed at 4:00 PM on weekdays and at 8:00 PM on weekends.
He further mentioned that there will be changes in the work schedules of the library staff because of the longer opening hours. Starting now, he said, library staff will work in three shifts from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
He claimed that keeping the library open longer would not cost a lot more money. "Not too significant," Djoko said. However, he stopped short of revealing how much the operating costs would change.
