TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo urges residents to avoid celebrating New Year's Eve by setting off fireworks out of solidarity with disaster-affected regions in Sumatra.

While he stressed that the advice is not meant to prohibit individuals from lighting fireworks, he called on Jakarta residents to refrain from using fireworks and firecrackers on New Year's Eve.

Nevertheless, Pramono ensures that all New Year celebrations organized by his government and private institutions, such as hotels and shopping centers, will forgo fireworks.

"I have decided that for Jakarta, both the activities held by the government and private institutions, no fireworks," Pramono stated in his release on Monday, December 22, 2025, adding that the government will issue a circular.

New Year's Eve celebrations will still take place in Jakarta, albeit on a smaller scale. Additionally, the government will present drone attractions and video mapping to replace the fireworks, raising themes of Jakarta as global city and sense of camaraderie with Sumatra.

The death toll from flash floods and landslides continues to rise in Sumatra after the disasters that struck last November. According to BNPB data as of December 23, 2025, 1,106 people died from 52 districts/cities in the three provinces. Meanwhile, 175 people are still reported missing. BNPB also reported that more than 7,000 people have been injured.

The Cabinet Secretary, Teddy Indra Wijaya, claimed that the central government has been handling the Sumatra disaster on a national scale since the first day. Teddy explained that the government has mobilized 50,000 TNI, Polri, and Basarnas troops to the disaster areas.

The central government, he said, has also allocated funds to assist the Sumatra disaster. "Rp60 trillion has been gradually disbursed," he said on Friday, December 19, 2025.
