TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Environmental Agency collected 132 tons of waste after the 2025 New Year's Eve celebration. This amount is less than the predicted 150 tons, but still 2 tons more than the 2024 New Year's Eve waste.
"The afternoon to evening shift is the most critical as people's activity peaks during those hours. We have arranged for the waste generated during the celebration to be transported immediately so that it does not pile up," Jakarta Environmental Agency head Asep Kuswanto said in a written statement on Wednesday, January 1, 2025.
Asep expressed his gratitude to Jakartans, who had heeded the call to celebrate New Year's Eve with minimal waste by bringing cups, and food in reusable containers, and putting waste in designated places. "This will speed up the waste management process," he said.
He ensured that the streets and tourist attractions that were the center of the New Year's Eve celebrations could function normally and comfortably in the morning. A total of 3,900 cleaning personnel were deployed before the peak of the New Year's Eve celebrations.
Supporting vehicles for the cleanup included 68 typer trucks, 53 street sweepers, and 27 all-terrain vehicles. A total of 2,100 personnel were deployed in strategic areas such as Monas, HI Roundabout, and along Jalan Thamrin-Sudirman, while the rest were deployed in five administrative areas of the city and the Seribu Islands.
Deputy Minister of Environment Diaz Hendropriyono recognized the cleaners who worked hard on New Year's Eve. "On behalf of all Jakartans, I would like to express my gratitude. Without your hard work, our environment would not be so clean and comfortable," said Diaz.
The center of New Year's Eve celebrations in Jakarta was at the HI Roundabout. People took to the streets to approach the entertainment stage, wait for the New Year's countdown, and watch the fireworks.
Based on the monitoring of the cleanup by the officers in the field, it seems that plastic waste still dominates. Plastic waste comes from beverage bottles, food packaging, and others.
