TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo said the idea of Car Free Night (CFN) in Jakarta needs thorough consideration. Pramono mentioned that he does not want the event to disturb business activities due to the closure of main roads.
Pramono expressed his concern as the reason for canceling the Car Free Night trial tonight, Saturday, July 5, 2025. The Jakarta Provincial Government initially planned to conduct the CFN trial in Thamrin Street and the Hotel Indonesia (HI) Roundabout concurrently with the Jakarta Muharram Festival 2025.
Pramono canceled the event to avoid disrupting the hotel businesses and residents' activities. "The principle is that I don't want the Car Free Night to disturb hotels that usually accommodate wedding guests, which typically finish at 10 PM," said Pramono in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta on Saturday, July 5, 2025.
According to Pramono, he and Jakarta Vice Governor Rano Karno must make wise decisions to avoid causing disturbances to the public. However, he added that they also need to provide better public spaces in Jakarta where residents can interact.
Pramono mentioned that the giant LED screen and main stage that had been set up in the HI Roundabout, Central Jakarta, will be used for the Car Free Day (CFD) event on Sunday, July 6, 2025. "This coming Sunday, there will be a pencak silat event that will break a significant MURI record, and that is what is currently being arranged in the HI Roundabout," he said.
Previously, the Jakarta Governor's Special Staff for Public Communication, Cyril Raoul Hakim or Chico Hakim, apologized for the cancellation of the Car Free Night and the Jakarta Muharram Festival 2025. The festival was planned as part of the commemoration of the Islamic New Year, which falls on the 1st of Muharam.
"After considering various factors, the Jakarta Provincial Government decided to promote the 1 Muharram commemoration at the community level and canceled the Jakarta Muharam Festival 2025," said Chico in a written statement on Friday, July 4, 2025.
Chico mentioned that initially, the Jakarta Muharram Festival 2025 was scheduled to take place from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM WIB (Indonesia Western Time). The event was supposed to include a torch parade crossing the Southwest Gate of the National Monument (Monas) towards the Hotel Indonesia (HI) Roundabout via MH Thamrin Street.
