TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Environmental Agency is preparing an early warning system (EWS) policy to address air quality issues in Jakarta. Asep Kuswanto, the head of the Jakarta Environmental Agency, said that the regulations related to this plan are being processed in the form of a governor's regulation.
"In the future, the Jakarta Environmental Agency will implement a new policy. We will provide the public with information about the air quality for the next three days. People can know what the air quality in Jakarta will be like today, tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow," Asep said when met at the Jakarta Eco Future Festival 2025 event at Cibis Park, Jakarta, on Thursday, September 25, 2025.
According to Asep, the public can monitor the current air conditions through the JAKI application and the website udara.jakarta.go.id. In the future, the Jakarta Environmental Agency will explore ways to cooperate with telecommunications service providers to enable the public to directly receive information about air quality. "So that the public can also be informed directly about the air conditions in Jakarta that we provide from the platform provider," he said.
He added that the transportation sector is the biggest cause of air pollution in Jakarta. "The problem of air quality in Jakarta is primarily caused by the transportation sector, where there are more than 20 million vehicles, both four-wheeled and two-wheeled, on the streets of Jakarta every day," said Asep.
In addition to transportation, the industrial sector is said to contribute to pollution, especially in the eastern, northern, and western parts of Jakarta. Therefore, Asep hopes that the public will be more concerned about air quality by conducting emission tests, using public transportation, and switching to environmentally friendly vehicles. He also advised taking preventive measures when the air quality deteriorates, such as using masks or limiting outdoor activities.
During the JEFF 2025 event, Jakarta Vice Governor Rano Karno also mentioned the plan. "With the EWS, the air quality in Jakarta can be accessed in real time; this system will be a significant step in addressing air quality issues more systematically and measurably," said Bang Doel, his nickname.
