TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian tennis star Janice Tjen claimed the championship at the WTA 250 Chennai Open 2025 in India on Sunday, November 2, 2025. She secured her first WTA singles victory by defeating Australia's Kimberly Birrell, the seventh seed, with a decisive score of 6-4, 6-3.
Tjen, the tournament's fourth seed, needed just two hours to complete the final. She recorded two aces and flawlessly converted all three break point opportunities she created during the match.
"In my opinion, I played very well here, improving in every round, and today I was able to play my best tennis," Tjen said, as reported by the WTA, reflecting on her consistent performance.
On her path to claim her first WTA singles title, the Jakarta-born player demonstrated resilience early on, requiring two three-set matches, or 'rubber-set matches', in the first two rounds in Chennai.
She then advanced smoothly to the semifinals after dominating Czech player Mia Pohnkov with a score of 6-3, 6-1. The quarterfinals, however, presented a tough challenge against Thailand's Lanlana Tararudee. The 23-year-old Tjen staged an impressive comeback from a 2-5 deficit in the decisive set to ultimately win the match in a tie-break.
Prior to winning the WTA 250 title in Chennai, Tjen had successfully captured the WTA 125 Jinan in China in mid-October. However, that specific title is not recognized by the WTA as being at the 250 level, as the WTA 125 category is comparable to a Challenger event.
Tjen also achieved a runner-up position in her debut performance at the WTA 250 Sao Paolo in Brazil in mid-September.
Tjen's success also extends to doubles. She recently secured her first WTA doubles title at the WTA 250 Guangzhou in China last week, partnering with Poland's Katarzyna Piter. That win complements her previous WTA 125 Suzhou doubles title achieved with compatriot Aldila Sutjiadi.
Janice Tjen and Aldila Sutjiadi have teamed up again at the Chennai Open. The second-seed Indonesian pair is now preparing to play the final match against the top-seeded Australian-Romanian duo, Monica Niculescu and Storm Hunter.
