TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 has once again struck the northeastern region of Aomori Prefecture, Japan, on Friday, December 12, 2025, as reported by CNA. This quake occurred amid the ongoing seismic activity in an area that was previously hit by a strong earthquake earlier this week, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The latest earthquake was recorded at 11:44 a.m. local time (09:44 a.m. Jakarta time) with the epicenter located at a depth of 20 kilometers. Japanese authorities issued a 1-meter high tsunami warning after the tremor, but it has since been lifted.
The JMA earlier put the earthquake's preliminary magnitude at 6.7.
So far, two 20-centimeter waves have been recorded, one in the town of Erimo on the main northern island of Hokkaido at 12:35 in the afternoon, and another three minutes later in the Aomori region, the agency said.
NHK television station stated that there were no significant changes at these two ports.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) also stated that the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.7 and was located 130 kilometers from the city of Kuji in Iwate Prefecture on the main island of Honshu.
On Monday, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake also shook northern Aomori and briefly triggered a tsunami warning that was lifted about six hours later. The earthquake earlier in the week had a depth of 54 kilometers off the eastern coast of Aomori and recorded an intensity of more than six on Japan's seven-point scale.
The government issued a special warning reminding residents from northern Hokkaido to Chiba, east of Tokyo, to be alert to the possibility of another powerful earthquake occurring within a week.

The tremor on Friday had an intensity of 4 on Japan's seismic intensity scale of 1-7.
NHK stated that the shaking level was lower than the larger 7.5 magnitude earthquake on Monday night, which caused items to fall off shelves, damaged roads, broke windows, and triggered tsunami waves up to 70 centimeters.
The Nuclear Regulation Authority stated on Friday that there were no immediate signs of anomalies at nuclear facilities in the region.
