TEMPO.CO, JakartaSouth Korea announced on Monday that the temporary closure of Muan Airport will remain in effect for another week, now extending until January 14. This decision comes as the investigation into the Jeju Air crash, which claimed 179 lives, is still ongoing.

Muan International Airport was initially scheduled to reopen on Tuesday, following the December 29 crash, but a joint investigation team is stepping up the investigation into the accident, leading to an escalation in the inquiry's level.

On Monday, January 6, two investigators departed for the United States, carrying two black boxes containing flight data that will be analyzed further by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). These black boxes contain recordings of the pilot and co-pilot's conversations, which are crucial for determining the cause of the accident.

On Saturday, January 4, the investigative team completed a transcript of the voice recordings recovered from the wreckage of the Jeju Air Boeing 737-800. It remains unclear whether these conversations will be made public.

The team also successfully repaired two of the aircraft's engines over the weekend, with assistance from GE, the manufacturer of the engines, in the ongoing forensic analysis. South Korea's Ministry of Transport has extended inspections of all Boeing 737-800 aircraft operated by Jeju Air and five other airlines in the country, including thorough checks of their maintenance records.

Flight 2216, en route from Bangkok to Muan, crashed while attempting to land at Muan Airport. The Boeing 737-800 was unable to deploy its landing gear, causing the plane to belly-flop onto the runway. It then skidded off the runway and collided with a concrete installation at the end, bursting into flames. Despite the pilot's mayday call and efforts to land the plane safely, the crash resulted in a devastating fire, claiming the lives of 179 people on board.

The exact cause of the Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 crash remains undetermined. Investigators suspect a combination of factors, including a bird strike, damaged landing gear, and the concrete obstruction at the runway’s end. All 179 victims have been identified, and some of the bodies have already been returned to their families for burial.
