TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) met with several electronic system providers (PSEs) to discuss creating regulations for child protection in the digital space. Participating providers included Google, YouTube, TikTok, Vidio, Meta, representatives from the gaming, financial technology, and transportation industries, as well as digital and technology industry associations.

Alexander Sabar, Director General of Digital Space Supervision at the Komdigi Ministry, emphasized the urgency of the draft regulation. "We want to ensure that this regulation can run well and provide optimal protection for children," he said, as quoted by Antara, on Thursday, February 13, 2025.

The discussion covered several key issues, including the minimum age for children to create accounts, restrictions on independent access to digital platforms, and classifying digital services by risk level. Participants also discussed age verification methods and implementing more child-friendly features. Sabar stressed that involving digital service stakeholders is essential for effective child protection policies.

The government previously announced plans to restrict social media access based on age as part of its child protection efforts. The Komdigi Ministry recently signed a decree establishing a special working team to study and develop rules for child protection in the digital realm.

This team, which began its work on February 3, 2025, includes representatives from ministries, academia, child education experts, Save The Children Indonesia, psychological institutions, and child protection agencies.

Aida Rezalina Azhar, the Minister's Special Staff for Inter-Institutional Relations, assured that the Komdigi Ministry aims to create policies that are not only legally sound but also foster a safe digital ecosystem.

"We want this policy to be a guideline that can be implemented by all stakeholders such as the government and technology industry," she said.
