TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) Nezar Patria remarked that the advertisement for the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program created by the Ministry of Komdigi, which utilizes artificial intelligence or AI, is a form of creativity.
He made the statement in response to criticisms regarding the use of AI in a government-made advertisement, which was deemed unappreciative for local animators.
"That's a part of creativity. I think there is nothing wrong with using AI for creative works," said Nezar at his office in Jakarta on Monday, February 17, 2025.
Nezar believes that the use of artificial intelligence is now common and widely applied in various activities, including advertising. He sees the MBG ad as just one example of how industries are incorporating AI into their marketing. Additionally, Komdigi still also embraces the creativity of original animators.
"And we also use various other tools, including those produced by creativity without AI too," he said.
Previously, the government released a promotional video for the free nutritious meal program made by artificial intelligence. The animated video depicts President Prabowo Subianto distributing packages of free nutritious meals at a school.
In Minister Komdigi Meutya Hafid's post on her personal Instagram page, the advertisement received criticism from netizens over allegations that it was entirely produced by AI.
"Creative workers don't need to expect much in current government era. The digital minister alone is using AI like this," wrote @ga*** in Meutya's post.
"Even a minister uses AI for their campaign products. Don't expect the creative animation industry to advance. The government/ministry doesn't even support," read another comment by user @zarninugra**.
Additionally, the video promoting Prabowo Subianto's main program was criticized for being disproportionate. Reasons for this included the uncovered food boxes and the brightly colored hijab worn by one of the students, which was seen as not representative of the typical attire in Indonesian schools.
Not only the MBG promotion, but it appears that Komdigi Minister Meutya also uses AI-made videos in promoting the awareness program for children against negative content. In the video, children can be seen playing with phones accompanied by explanations from Meutya shown in the form of cartoon animation.
