TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a tectonic earthquake jolting East Java and Bali on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at 04:04 p.m. local time. BMKG has updated the magnitude of the quake into 5.3.
The epicenter of the offshore earthquake was pinned at coordinates 7.87 south latitude and 114.45 longitude east, 40 kilometers northeast of Banyuwangi, East Java, at a depth of 12 kilometers.
"Considering the location of the epicenter and the hypocenter depth, the shallow earthquake was trigggered by an active fault activity," said Daryono, the Director of Earthquake and Tsunami Center at BMKG, in his statement on Thursday.

Daryono said the "destructive" earthquake was felt at IV MMI in Banyuwangi and Penebel, which means many people felt the shaking indoors during the day.
In the Lumajang, Kuta, Denpasar, and Buleleng areas, it was felt with an intensity scale of III MMI, where the vibration was distinctly felt indoors, akin to a truck passing by.
In Jember and Bondowoso, the tremor was felt at II-III MMI.
In Pasuruan, Surabaya, Situbondo, South Kuta, Pamekasan, Mataram, and West Lombok, the shaking was less intense at the II MMI scale, causing light hanging objects to sway.
The modeling results indicate that the earthquake did not result in tsunami threats. As of 04:40 p.m. local time, BMKG monitoring shows five aftershocks with the largest magnitude of 3.3.
