TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An incident involving French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron has sparked a buzz online. A video capturing Brigitte playfully pushing the president’s face inside an airplane has gone viral.
The video was taken after the couple, known for their notable age gap, arrived in Vietnam. The video went viral on Monday, May 26, 2025, sparking speculation.
According to Anadolu, the video was recorded by several Western international news agencies. The video shows Macron exiting the plane on Sunday night when Brigitte Macron, dressed in red, suddenly placed both her hands on his face. Macron promptly stepped back, smiled, and waved to the camera.
Initially, the Elysee Palace dismissed the video as fake when contacted by the French media, Franceinfo. However, the palace later confirmed its authenticity, describing the moment as a 'normal teasing between the couple.'
A source close to the president told reporters, "It was a moment when the president and his wife were unwinding for the last time before starting the trip, teasing each other."
No other news agency confirmed the authenticity of the video except Franceinfo, which reported unofficial responses from Elysee. Macron also appeared momentarily surprised but quickly turned to wave to those waiting outside, according to Le Parisien.
20 Minutes News highlighted that the images spread quickly on social media, particularly on accounts opposed to Emmanuel Macron. The scene sparked many comments, some interpreting the gesture as a small quarrel or even a slap. However, the Elysee Palace insisted that it was a relaxed moment between the two.
The video of Macron and his wife disembarking from the plane shows the First Lady of France apparently refusing to hold his arm as they came down the stairs.
Macron arrived in Hanoi on Sunday night to begin a week-long tour in Southeast Asia aimed at deepening economic and diplomatic relations.
