TEMPO.CO, Bekasi - Floods paralyzed the Mega Bekasi Hypermall shopping center on Ahmad Yani Street, South Bekasi Sub-district, Bekasi City, on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, due to a Bekasi river overflow after receiving water from the Bogor region.
"The basement area is now inaccessible,” said a store employee, Ayu. She tried to come to work but was told to go home by her superior due to the flood.
According to Ayu, the mall was flooded around 10:00 a.m. local time. Fairly strong water current flooded the basement and the low-lying areas in the mall complex. Until 2:00 p.m., the water was observed to be as high as an adult's chest in the outdoor parking area.
The Mega Bekasi Hypermall is located about one kilometer from the Bekasi River. Usually, the overflowing water only forms puddles around the bamboo forest tourist area on the riverbank. But this time, a significant volume of water overflowed all the way to the mall area.
"It was still dry at nine in the morning, but it’s two meters high now,” said Rudi, a tenant owner in the mall.
The Bekasi City Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) noted that water discharge was quite significant upstream, with the water level about 875 centimeters at the top, or twice the normal upper limit of 350 centimeters.
