TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mark Carney, former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, is set to be sworn in as Canada’s new prime minister, succeeding Justin Trudeau after more than nine years in office.
The inauguration of Canada’s 24th prime minister is scheduled for Friday, March 14, 2024, at 11 a.m., with Governor General Mary Simon presiding over the ceremony. Carney will be inaugurated alongside his cabinet.
Carney was elected leader of the Canadian Liberal Party on Sunday. Following his inauguration, he will face major challenges ahead.
As reported by Reuters, Canada is currently facing a complex situation, especially due to trade tensions with the United States under the leadership of President Donald Trump. Canada is also set to hold a general election soon.
Unlike his predecessor, Carney is reportedly expected to form a more streamlined cabinet.
According to Bloomberg on Wednesday, the new cabinet is expected to consist of only 15 to 20 ministers, significantly reduced from the 37 cabinet members including the prime minister in Trudeau's era.
This streamlining may reflect a more efficient approach that Carney aims to bring forward, in line with his background as a central banker.
This change in leadership marks the end of Trudeau's era, who has been leading Canada since 2015. It will usher in a new chapter in Canadian politics amid various complex domestic and international challenges.
