TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chaos hit Spain and Portugal on Monday after a massive power outage struck both nations. The capital cities of Madrid and Lisbon were also affected by the power outage on Monday, April 28, 2025. The power was restored on Tuesday morning.

According to Sky News, millions of people were caught in chaos after the massive blackout paralyzed many areas, causing train stoppages, plane landings, disrupted internet and mobile phone services. The power outage resulted in traffic lights and ATMs going dark, and several hospital operations being disturbed.

The Spanish Ministry of the Interior declared a national state of emergency. Spain and Portugal held emergency cabinet meetings as officials tried to determine the cause of the power outage that began around 12:30 pm.

About half of the power supply in Spain has been restored, according to Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. The rest will be restored today.

In a televised speech, Sanchez said that authorities still do not know what caused the power outage in the Iberian Peninsula. He also has not suspected any other causes.

He urged the public to refrain from speculation and advised them to only contact emergency services if absolutely necessary.

Eduardo Prieto, the head of operations at the Spanish electric grid operator Red Electrica, stated that such an event had never happened before, calling it extraordinary.

Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro said that the power in his country would be fully restored in the coming hours. He stated that all state services remain operational despite various difficulties and also said there were no indications that the power outage was due to a cyber-attack.

Portuguese electric grid operator Ren claimed that the power outage was caused by a fault in the Spanish electric grid, related to a rare atmospheric phenomenon. According to Ren, extreme temperature variations in Spain caused anomalies in the very high voltage lines. It will take about a week to fully restore the grid to normal.

As a result of the power outage, the Spanish Ministry of the Interior declared a state of emergency in the regions of Andalusia, Extremadura, Murcia, La Rioja, and Madrid. Following a late-night cabinet meeting, Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro announced an energy crisis. The Portuguese electric grid operator warned that the full power recovery would be more complicated.
