TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Instagram is reportedly considering launching Reels as a separate app. According to The Information report, Instagram Head Adam Mosseri shared this plan with his staff in a meeting last week.
As quoted by Reuters, Instagram's parent company, Meta, is said to want to take advantage of the uncertainty facing TikTok in the United States. By launching a dedicated app for Reels, Meta seeks to offer a short video-watching experience similar to TikTok, which remains the dominant platform in this segment.
As of now, Meta has not responded to requests for comment regarding this report.
In addition to the Reels app launch plan, Meta recently announced a new video editing app called Edits in January 2025. This move is seen as the company's effort to attract users who rely on CapCut, a video editing app owned by ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok.
Previously, Meta attempted to launch a standalone video-sharing app called Lasso in 2018. However, the app failed to gain many users and was eventually discontinued. With this new strategy, Meta seems to be strengtheningits position in the short video market.
