Middle Eastern Countries Advise Indonesia Not to Evacuate Its Citizens

3 hours ago 9

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has conveyed that several countries affected by conflict in the Middle East do not recommend that the Indonesian government evacuate its citizens from their respective territories.

Director General of Asia, Pacific, and Africa at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Santo Darmosumarto, said that the authorities in several Gulf countries have instead advised foreign citizens in their territories to stay at home and remain calm.

"The governments in the Middle East do not recommend an evacuation," said Santo in a press release broadcasted on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Youtube channel on Friday, March 6, 2026.

He explained that there are currently 519,412 Indonesian citizens in the Middle East. They are spread across several countries affected by the conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel, including Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

According to Santo, the current situation in each Gulf country varies. However, the majority of them suggest not to carry out an evacuation during the ongoing heated conflict.

"Each country's government is very aware and progressive in terms of providing recommendations to foreign citizens to remain calm, safe, and ensuring that they will be provided with their various needs as usual," said Santo.

Acting Director of Indonesian Citizen Protection at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heni Hamidah, then confirmed that currently no Indonesian citizens have been injured or directly impacted by the ongoing armed conflict between the U.S. and Iran.

However, some Indonesian citizens are affected by flight cancellations, leaving them stranded. "The current impact is that some Indonesian citizens are stranded due to airspace restrictions and closures, flight rerouting, and international transportation schedule uncertainties," she said.

She claimed that these stranded Indonesian citizens have now been provided with accommodation, lodging, and meals while waiting for further flights by the Indonesian representation in the respective localities. She ensured that the government would also assist in rescheduling their flights so that they could return to their homeland.

Unlike the local population in conflict-affected areas, Indonesian citizens in Iran are set to be evacuated gradually. The first phase of evacuation will commence this week with 32 citizens being repatriated. They will be evacuated via Azerbaijan. "As for the subsequent evacuation plans, they will be decided by the Indonesian government after taking into account the most updated security considerations," said Heni.
