TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Immigration and Corrections, Agus Andrianto, admitted that the number of inmates at Kutacane Prison in Southeast Aceh exceeds its capacity. On Monday, March 10, as many as 49 inmates fled from the prison.
"Kutacane prison actually has the capacity of 100 people, but it’s now occupied by 368 inmates, which triggers various problems,” Agus said during the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the National Narcotics Agency at the ministry office in Jakarta on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
According to Agus, overcapacity is typical for Indonesian prisons, but the exact cause of the Monday prison escape remains under ministry investigation. The minister said the Director General of Corrections, Mashudi, is in Aceh along with members of the House Commission XIII to get an overview of what happened.
“We want to know whether food was indeed the trigger, or other problems as a result of the officers’ behaviors,” said Agus.
Dozens of inmates escaped from Kutacane Prison on Monday evening, just before the time to break fast. Antara reported that the inmates broke through three previously locked security doors. Most of them were detained on drug-related charges.
Following the breakout, the inmates fled through the main prison door, and some also escaped through the roof. The prison authorities stated that they did indeed have problems with overcapacity. Inmates also requested for a “love room” to be provided in the facility.
On a separate occasion, the public relations officer at the Directorate General of Corrections, Rika Aprianti, said in her official statement that 14 inmates had been recaptured and surrendered, while the remaining 35 are still being pursued.
