TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen) Abdul Mu'ti announced a change in the Ramadan holiday for school students. Mu'ti stated that a joint circular letter (SEB) regarding the change only awaits the signatures of three related ministers, namely the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, the Minister of Religion, and the Minister of Home Affairs.
"God willing, in the near future, the joint circular letter will be signed by all three of us," said Mu'ti during a media briefing held at his office in Central Jakarta on Monday, March 3, 2025.
The change is a response to various developments and the dynamics of adjusting the holiday period ahead of the 1466 Hijri Eid al-Fitr, which has been discussed with relevant parties. "This change is in accordance with our meeting with the Minister of Transportation and also in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of State Apparatus Empowerment and Bureaucratic Reform regarding work from anywhere (WFA) and also the advice or direction from Mr. Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono to make the holiday seven days before [Eid al-Fitr]," said Mu'ti.
Previously, the Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, also known as AHY, stated that the "Work From Anywhere" (WFA) policy for civil servants would be implemented before Eid al-Fitr. AHY said this step was taken to anticipate the peak of traffic density before the celebrations of Eid al-Fitr or Lebaran.
"We know that Eid al-Fitr is close to Nyepi Day," said AHY in a press conference at Soekarno-Hatta Airport on Saturday, March 1, 2025. "So, we need to organize it properly so that there will not be severe congestion (of vehicles/traffic)."
According to Mu'ti, after the adjustment, the independent study schedule for students in family, places of worship, and the community will fall on February 27-28, and March 3-5, 2025. The schedule change includes a reduction in school teaching and learning days, which automatically increases the holidays at the end of the fasting month or before Eid al-Fitr. "So, starting from March 6 to 20, it will be studying at schools, madrasahs, or religious educational institutions, and then from March 21 to 28, and April 2 to 8, it will be the Eid al-Fitr holiday for schools, madrasahs, or religious educational institutions," he said.
For your information, in the previously issued joint circular letter, the teaching days in madrasah during Ramadan this year will be from March 6 to 27, 2025. With this change, the holiday period for students and schools will be extended by one week or seven days at the end of Ramadan.
The news about the schedule change first surfaced after Mu'ti's statement in a virtual event to welcome students entering Ramadan, which was held on Saturday, March 1, 2025. In the event, broadcast live on the Pelajar Merah Putih YouTube channel, Mu'ti briefly mentioned the planned schedule change.
