TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu'ti, has hinted at the potential return of national exams (Ujian Nasional/UN) in the 2025/2026 academic year. He revealed that his ministry has developed a concept for reimplementing the exams.
“[The return is planned for] the 2025/2026 academic year, but the exact form will be announced later,” said Abdul Mu’ti during a meeting at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture in Jakarta on Monday, December 30, 2024.
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education also recently convened with the newly established student admissions committee. According to Mu'ti, the meeting explored how national exams could be used by universities for selecting potential students.
He emphasized that the UN serves as a tool for quality assessment, allowing universities to make informed decisions regarding prospective students. Additionally, he highlighted the value of national exam results as individual student performance data.
“So far, the existing system relies on sampling, resulting in an incomplete picture of student capabilities,” Mu'ti remarked.
The Minister's proposal to reintroduce national exams has drawn mixed reactions from the public. In early November, the Good Education Alliance launched a petition on change.org opposing the return of the national exams. The petition has garnered over 2,000 signatures to date.
Separately, Hetifah Sjaifudian, Chairperson of Commission X of the House of Representatives (DPR), emphasized the need to carefully assess the function and purpose of national exams before making a decision.
“We should consider whether the UN should determine graduation or act as data for national education mapping,” Hetifah told reporters at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on October 29, 2024.
Meanwhile, Nisa Felicia, Executive Director of the Center for Education and Policy Studies (PSKP), expressed concerns about a potential setback if national exams were reinstated. “We've witnessed the negative impacts of cheating, with some even advocating for its legalization to ensure a 100% pass rate,” Nisa commented during a discussion forum held by PSKP at the Djakarta Theater on Wednesday, October 30, 2024.
