TEMPO.CO, JakartaThree Indonesian migrant workers who survived the recent shooting by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency are currently still in Malaysia, the Foreign Affairs Ministry reported. The incident, which occurred in the waters off Tanjung Rhu, also claimed the lives of two other Indonesian nationals.

"Two have fully recovered, while one is still receiving treatment but is showing improvement," Judha Nugraha, the ministry’s Director of Indonesian Citizens Protection, said on Thursday, February 20.

Judha explained that the three are currently under investigation by the Royal Malaysia Police. Meanwhile, the Indonesian Embassy has arranged legal assistance for them.

He also confirmed that the workers had been living in Malaysia without proper documentation. "They worked various jobs in informal sectors, such as barbershops," he said. Their attempt to return to Indonesia through unauthorized routes ultimately led to the shooting.

So far, there is no indication that they were victims of human trafficking.

The shooting took place on Friday, January 24, 2025, in the waters off Tanjung Rhu, Selangor. One Indonesian national, identified as B, died at the scene, and their body has been repatriated to Riau Province. Another victim, Viktor Maruli Tua Simaremare, passed away after receiving treatment at Idris Shah Serdang Hospital. His remains have been sent back to North Sumatra.

Malaysian authorities stated that the shooting was a response to resistance from the migrants. However, when met by the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, the survivors denied any form of resistance during their capture by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM). "Both asserted that none of the Indonesian passengers used sharp weapons against APMM officers," Judha told reporters on Wednesday, January 29.

As of Monday, February 10, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) were still investigating the incident, including questioning six APMM officers involved in the incident under Malaysia’s Firearms Act of 1960. According to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the investigation findings will be shared with the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
