TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) reported that Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, experienced six eruptions within the observation period of July 7-8, 2025. The recorded volcanic activity indicated a high level of explosivity with very strong gas pressure.
"The type of earthquakes recorded post-eruption indicates the continuous release of volcanic gas (degassing) in the summit area as well as the supply of magma that has not completely ceased," said Muhammad Wafid, the Chairperson of Geological Agency as quoted from Antara on July 8, 2025.
Based on the compiled visual data, hot clouds were observed, indicating the collapse of the eruption column and resulting in dangerous pyroclastic flow. Crater smoke was also observed billowing up to a height of 1,500 meters from the peak.
During the observation period until 06:00 WITA (Central Indonesia Time), seismic activity was also recorded as very active, including dozens of avalanche, emission, shallow volcanic, deep volcanic, and continuous tremors. Currently, the status of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level IV (alert status).
Activities of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki
The volcanic activities of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki have been continuously recorded intensively. Based on data from MAGMA Indonesia owned by the Geological Agency, a series of eruptions occurred with high frequency from Monday to early Wednesday. The eruptions of Mount Lewotobi varied, ranging from those visually observed with ash columns reaching tens of thousands of meters high to those only detected through seismograph recordings at night.
Wednesday, July 9, 2025
- 02:52 local time, eruptions continued, but were not visually observable.
- 02:46 local time, although not visually observed, an eruption was recorded by a seismograph with maximum vibration amplitude of 26.6 mm for 134 seconds.
- 02:31 local time, another eruption event was not visually observed, but was recorded as a seismic vibration with a peak amplitude of 11 mm lasting for 115 seconds.
Tuesday, July 8, 2025
- 22:21 local time, an eruption ejected a dense grayish-black ash column to a height of approximately 2,000 meters from the peak (3,584 meters above sea level), with spreading direction to the west and northwest.
- 16:08 local time, an eruption with a thick gray ash column approximately 1,200 meters high from the peak (2,784 meters above sea level) was observed, moving west and northwest. This event was also recorded on seismograph with an amplitude of 4.4 mm for 54 seconds.
- 05:53 local time, a significant eruption produced a dense grayish-black ash column about 4,000 meters above the peak (5,584 meters above sea level) moving west and northwest, accompanied by a maximum seismic vibration amplitude of 14.8 mm for 191 seconds.
04:54 local time, an eruption that was not visually observed was recorded by seismic instruments with a maximum vibration amplitude of 7.4 mm and lasted for 63 seconds.
Monday, July 7, 2025
- 19:32 local time, an eruption formed a dense gray to black ash column reaching approximately 13,000 meters from the peak (14,584 meters above sea level).
- 15:19 local time, an ongoing eruption was observed, with a dense gray ash column rising about 1,000 meters above the peak (2,584 meters above sea level) and inclining to the west.
- 11:05 local time, the most violent eruption with a dense gray to black ash column soaring to an extreme height, approximately 18,000 meters above the peak (19,584 meters above sea level), and spreading volcanic material to the north, northeast, and northwest.
